Safety and Limitations

Safe Treks is a planning aid that performs arithmetic on the ratings and weights you enter. It does not inspect your vehicle, measure a loaded combination, determine legal compliance, or certify that a particular towing setup is safe.

Use the ratings for your exact equipment

Confirm ratings using the certification labels and documentation for the specific tow vehicle, trailer, tires, wheels, hitch, and receiver in your setup. Configurations and installed equipment can differ, so do not rely on a rating copied from a similar model. For federal definitions of GVWR, GCWR, GAWR, and curb weight, see 49 CFR section 571.3; use manufacturer documentation for the ratings that apply to your equipment.

Verify actual loaded weights

The planner uses the values typed into it; it cannot detect missing, outdated, or inaccurate weights. Weigh the vehicle and trailer in the configuration you intend to travel with, including occupants, fuel, accessories, supplies, and cargo. Use scale measurements appropriate to check the relevant vehicle, axle, and trailer limits, and compare those measurements with the applicable manufacturer ratings.

Keep one unit system throughout the calculator. It does not convert pounds to kilograms or check that entered values use matching units.

What the calculator does not evaluate

The displayed remaining weights and percentages are comparisons based only on entered values. A positive remaining figure, a percentage below 100%, or a green display is not a safety determination and does not mean that every axle, tire, hitch, or other limit is satisfied.

Combined weight and tongue load

Safe Treks adds its estimated vehicle total to its estimated trailer total. It does not model how tongue or pin weight transfers between the trailer and tow vehicle. If the same hitch load is included in both totals, the combined estimate can count it twice. Therefore, do not use the combined figure as a measured gross combination weight or as a substitute for scale readings.

Before traveling

Follow the instructions and limits provided by the vehicle, trailer, tire, and towing-equipment manufacturers. If a measured weight exceeds a rating, a value is uncertain, or the setup behaves unexpectedly, do not rely on this planner to resolve it; consult the relevant manufacturer or a qualified towing professional.

For details about the calculator's fields and arithmetic, see the Weight Planning Guide.
